Chemical Toxicity Syndrome often is associated with major exposures to toxic chemicals and subsequent hypersensitivity to a wide range of chemicals, even at low levels of exposure. In most cases, the immune system becomes severely depressed which in turn allows for other problems such as Candida albicans infections and food allergy. The treatment, according to many who are familiar with the problem, is to: 1) avoid the irritating chemicals totally, 2) reduce as many immunological challenges as possible, 3) take supplements which help to rebuild the immune response and strengthen the body, 4) detoxify the body as much as possible, and 5) make certain lifestyle changes concerning diet, exercise, stress, relaxation, etc.

The Supplement Schedule (above) provides an excellent starting point and discussion (below) offers other suggestions that may be helpful. These suggestions do not necessarily represent a comprehensive program for regaining health.

Consume a diet high in fiber-containing foods such as organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains (e.g., brown rice, millet, and oatmeal), beans, nuts and seeds (chia, sunflower, flax, pumpkin, almond, walnut and sesame in small amounts — 1 or 2 ounces — are good). The diet should be relatively low in fat (e.g., if you consume meats, then they should be organic, grass-fed/free-range with an emphasis on poultry and wild caught fish (i.e., salmon, tuna, mackerel, trout, and bluefish) in the amount of a few ounces per day). Try “Hank's Vegetable Soup” several times a week.

Consume at least 32 ounces of fresh vegetable juices daily. Vegetables soups and juices are very alkalinizing and help flush toxins from the body. We suggest that you mix your vegetable juices with one or more REJUVENATE!™ superfoods. Avoid all sweets (sugar) and processed/refined foods (white bread and pasta). Try not to eat the same thing every day.

Chemical toxicity can be exacerbated by allergic/hypersensitivity reactions to the food you eat. Be observant to correlations between symptoms and foods you have eaten. You may need to follow an anti-Candida program if you have been on antibiotics for a long time. Use pH paper to determine the pH of your urine and saliva. Adjust your levels to around 7.0-7.5 by choosing a proper ratio of acid forming to alkaline forming foods (see Chart entitled “Effects of Food on Body Chemistry”). In order to adjust body pH levels, you may use ½ tsp of baking soda in 4–8 oz of water several times daily.

It is important to make certain lifestyle changes that allow you to avoid the toxic chemicals that can cause you to feel ill. You may need to move out of your area or find special housing that uses natural/green materials (paints, flooring, sealants, bedding, etc.). Cooking and drinking water and even bathing/cleaning water must be purified. Clothing, sheets/blankets, towels, soaps, detergents, makeup, shampoos, etc., should be made from natural materials. The use of solvents, petrochemical cleaners, pesticides, and other strong chemicals needs to be avoided (baking soda, vinegar, and some natural cleaners are preferred). The use of an air purifer (that includes a negative ion generator and low levels of ozone) may be helpful by eliminating indoor chemicals and molds. Please see Debra Lynn Dadd’s Home Safe Home, which is an excellent resource for locating safe materials.

Primary detoxification pathways (including intestines, kidneys, skin, and lungs) need to function at a high level. For example, we recommend an individual should have at least one bowel movement daily with an optimum number being three bowel movements daily. This is to keep the toxins moving out of the body or they will just be resorbed back into the liver. The liver is the body’s primary organ of detoxification. Liver support from nutrients such as milk thistle extract, lipoic acid, glutathione, NAC, Vitamin C, and dandelion root is very important.

Taking bowel cleansing nutrients helps sequester toxins to move them out of the body. These nutrients include Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula, montmorillonite clay (Edible Earth), charcoal, psyllium seed & husks, chlorella, spirulina, and slippery elm bark. One of the best way of moving toxins out through the skin is by means of saunas, especially far infrared saunas. Clay baths may also be helpful. Try skin brushing. Herbs supporting kidney function include: parsley greens and root, juniper berries, corn silk, burdock root, and uva ursi. These can be taken as teas or made into herbal tinctures. Lung function can be enhanced by nutrients such as: tincture of lobelia leaf and seed, stinging nettle leaf, rutin and quercetin, NAC, glutathione, Vitamin C, MSM, and magnesium.

Relaxation exercises (including progressive relaxation, visualization, abdominal breathing, and autogenics) are key to becoming well again. We have found that Biofeedback Training can be very helpful in reducing chemical sensitivity. Work with a qualified  expert in your area (see: http://www.behavmedfoundation.org). Please learn the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) that allows you to reset your energy system – this has been a lifesaver for many people (see: http://www.eft-for-transformation.com/index.html). Stress reduction methods you will ideally practice daily can include yoga, peaceful music, or meditation/prayer. You may find it helpful to read Joan Borysenko’s Minding the Body, Mending the Mind.

Please get reasonable amounts of exercise appropriate for you on a daily basis. However, remember that overtaxing your body may lead to an overproduction of adrenalin which can worsen or increase symptoms. It is important to get an adequate amount of sleep, as well as reasonable amounts of sunlight. Take baths daily with Magnesium Oil or Flakes (1-2 cups or more) and 1 or more cups of baking soda (add 1 tsp of almond oil if it is too drying). Magnesium Oil also may be sprayed directly on skin for rapid transdermal absorption.
