Please eat a diet that is low in simple carbohydrates (do not eat anything with sugar or refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, white rice, or potatoes). For a period of 3–6 months do not eat any grains–in most cases this will result in weight loss and lower blood sugar. After 3-6 months, you may begin to introduce a small amount of whole grains such as brown rice, buckwheat, millet, and sprouted breads (such as Ezekiel bread). Eat a diet relatively high in protein (eat only organic meat, organic poultry and wild caught fish) and high in fiber containing foods such as organic vegetables, fruits (low glycemic fruits such as berries), beans, nuts and seeds (sunflower, almond, chia, walnuts, and sesame) in small amounts–2 to 4 ounces–are good. Eat smaller meals more frequently, each with some protein, in order to maintain a more stable blood sugar level. Eat an alkaline forming diet that maintains a urine pH between 6.5 and 7.0 – follow the recommendations on the attached chart entitled “Effect of Foods on Body Chemistry.” Consume 1–2 quarts of vegetable juices daily with combinations of carrots, beets (bottoms and green tops), celery, parsley, spinach, cucumber, hot peppers, garlic, ginger, and lemon. Try eating “Hank's Vegetable Soup” several times a week. Avoid alcohol, sodas, coffee, processed/refined foods, and foods containing artificial preservatives, flavors, and colors. Drink purified or spring water, especially avoiding chlorine and fluorine. Eat an organic whole-foods diet as much as possible – eat many of your foods raw. Try not to eat the same thing every day as this can lead to food allergy. Avoid fried foods, dairy and dairy products. Do not smoke!
Stress reduction methods should be practiced daily–peaceful music, biofeedback or meditation/prayer may be helpful – you may find it helpful to read Joan Borysenko’s book Minding the Body, Mending the Mind. Please make sure to get reasonable amounts of exercise appropriate for you on a daily basis–walking for at least 20 minutes and up to 4 miles daily is quite appropriate. Yoga, tai chi, swimming, and bicycling are excellent forms of exercise as well. It has been shown that exercise alone can often significantly lower your blood sugar. Weight reduction, which many of the above recommendations will help you to accomplish, is important especially if you are overweight.
