5-MTHF (one milligram) (100 veggie caps)
5-MTHF (one milligram)
as (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate from Quatrefolic®†
A Natural, Active, Coenzyme Form of Folate
5-MTHF, known as (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (also known as L-5-MTHF), is one active form in a group of vitamins known as folates. In contrast to folic acid, a synthetic form of folate, 5-MTHF is one of the forms of folate found naturally in foods. Folate deficiency is believed to be the most common vitamin deficiency in the world due to food processing, food selection, and intestinal disorders. 5-MTHF in the body can be converted into any of the other active forms of folate.
5-MTHF provides one milligram of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (in the form of a vegetarian glucosamine salt) from a very pure, patented form called Quatrefolic®. It is contained in a veggie capsule with only microcrystalline cellulose (filler) and silica (flow agent). It contains no magnesium stearate.
NUTRITIONAL APPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS
Folate coenzymes are responsible for the following important metabolic functions and benefits: 1) Formation of purines and pyrimidines, which in turn are needed for synthesis of the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. This is especially important during fetal development in the first trimester of pregnancy, 2) Formation of heme, the iron-containing protein in hemoglobin, 3) Interconversion of the 3-carbon amino acid serine from the 2-carbon amino acid glycine, 4) Formation of the amino acids tyrosine from phenylalanine and glutamic acid from histidine, 5) Formation of the amino acid methionine from homocysteine (Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin also is needed for this conversion). In the reconversion of homocysteine to methionine the body uses the methionine to make the important amino acid s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), 6) Synthesis of choline from ethanolamine, 7) Formation and maturation of red and white blood cells, and 8) Conversion of nicotinamide to N’-methylnicotinamide.
Numerous drugs are known to inhibit the body’s ability to utilize folate, including: 1) aspirin, 2) cholesterol lowering drugs, 3) oral birth control pills, 4) antacids, and 5) methotrexate when used for rheumatoid arthritis. When taking these drugs (and many others) it is recommended that you take 800–1,000 mcg daily of folate, preferably as 5-MTHF (or folinic acid). When taking folate it is recommended that you take adequate amounts of Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin. (Please note that folate supplementation may interfere with anticonvulsant drugs.)
The mechanism of action of Quatrefolic® is related to the action of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the active part of the proprietary ingredient. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate derives from tetrahydrofolic acid, through a series of metabolic reactions. Tetrahydrofolic acid acts as a coenzyme in several vital metabolic reactions participating in the transfer as acceptors and donors of various one-carbon fragments involved in the biosynthesis of nucleotides purines and pyrimidines, and in the metabolism of several important amino acids.
In concert with vitamin B12, folate coenzymes allow the conversion of the amino acid homocysteine to methionine, the lack of this conversion has been associated with some health issues. Conversion of tetrahydrofolic acid to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is mediated by the action of the enzyme methylentetrahydrofolate reductase. In individuals with a genetic defect of methylentetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme conversion is limited, predisposing these individuals for an increased risk for certain health issues. Supplementation with 5-methyltetrahydrofolate might be preferable to folic acid, being it is immediately available to react with homocysteine to avoid the possibility of hyperhomocysteineamia.
