All steroid hormones (including neurosteroids) in the body are made from pregnenolone. Key organs producing pregnenolone include the brain, the adrenal cortex, and the gonads. It is the primary building block for the sex hormones (including progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, and estrogen), aldosterone, and corticosteroids.
