R-LIPOIC ACID contains 50 mg of potassium stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic acid (KRALA). The R-Lipoic acid in this product is of the highest quality available and is contained in a vegetarian capsule.

APPLICATIONS: R-Alpha Lipoic acid is normally made in the human body, where it functions primarily as an important metabolic nutrient -- especially in the conversion of pyruvic acid into acetyl coenzyme A. As such, it plays a crucial role in the metabolism of both fats and carbohydrates into energy. In addition, R-Lipoic acid functions as an extremely powerful antioxidant capable of trapping many different types of free radicals in the body.

Because it is both water-soluble and fat-soluble, R-Lipoic acid can operate in a broader range of body tissues than most other antioxidants. Structurally, its small size enables R-Lipoic acid to enter areas of the body not easily accessible to many other substances. This allows it, for example, to enter the cell nucleus and prevent free-radical damage to DNA. Because it is such a powerful antioxidant and can easily function and exist both in reduced and oxidized states, R-Lipoic acid can protect other important antioxidants, including glutathione, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.

R-Lipoic acid can chelate heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, mercury, free iron, and free copper out of the body. R-Lipoic acid is one of two nutrients known (milk thistle extract is the other) to protect against mushroom poisoning. Because of its potent capabilities, R-Lipoic acid is used in a large number of applications, including diabetes, cataracts, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, detoxification, neurological function, cancer, heart disease, and liver disorders.

When Alpha-Lipoic Acid is synthesized in the laboratory, a 50/50 racemic mixture of the R and S enantiomers results in what is called R/S Lipoic Acid. This has been the most popular form of commercially available Lipoic Acid (also named DL Thioctic Acid).

Several years ago, R-Alpha Lipoic acid became commercially available at a price that was about five times higher than R/S Lipoic Acid. The problem was that at relatively low temperatures this material melted, polymerized, and was not absorbed very well into the body. Knowing this fact, we opted to not use this material at that time, but instead continued to sell the R/S Lipoic Acid form. More recently, new technological advancements have allowed for the stabilization of the R-Lipoic Acid isomer.

We have chosen to replace the R/S Lipoic Acid in our lipoic acid product with Potassium-R-Lipoate (KRALA). KRALA is a highly bioavailable and stable potassium salt of R-Lipoic Acid. It has been shown that heating KRALA to 150°C (302°F) for six hours does not result in loss of activity. In real-time stability tests, KRALA remains stable longer than 18 months.

In addition, research studies show that KRALA is many times more bioavailable than either the R-Lipoic Acid form (which has been on the market) or than the R/S Lipoic Acid form that we has been selling. This has allowed us to reduce the amount per vegetarian capsule to 50 mg and still provide significantly greater benefits.
