ST. JOHN’S WORT
Hypericum perforatum Capsules
Standardized to 0.3% Hypericin and 3% Hyperforin
ST. JOHN’S WORT (Hypericum perforatum) is a yellow-flowering perennial herb that grows wild in America and Europe. The herb offers many therapeutic properties and has been used for thousands of years. The earliest recorded medicinal usage dates to ancient Greek times. St. John’s wort is often used internally as a tea, and has been long used externally as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and astrigent. Standardized extracts of St. John’s wort today are commonly used for depression and anxiety disorders.
HPDI’s St. John’s Wort formula contains 300 mg per capsule of a 0.3% hypericin and 3% hyperforin standardized extract (from flowering tops) of St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum). The formula contains the smallest amounts of magnesium stearate and magnesium trisilicate.
NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS & APPLICATIONS:
Current treatment of mild to moderate depression with the standardized extract of hypericum consists of a daily dosage of 300 mg taken three times daily.
The antidepressant actions of St. John’s wort are due to its ability to inhibit the action of the enzyme monoamine oxidase. Monoamine oxidase is responsible for the breakdown of two brain chemicals: serotonin and norepinephrine. Norepinephrine acts as a brain stimulant. By inhibiting MAO and increasing norepinephrine, St. John’s wort exerts a mild antidepressive action. Recent research indicates that it is primarily the hyperforin content of St. John’s wort that is responsible for its antidepressive action. For this reason, extracts standardized to contain a minimum of 3% hyperforin are currently being recommended.
Hypericin and other constituents of St. John’s wort also exhibit potent antiviral activity, as well as antibacterial activity. It is possible that larger amounts of St. John’s wort may result in photosensitizing reactions (e.g., skin reddening) in the presence of intense sunlight or other intense light sources (such as tanning beds), especially for light skinned people. If you are taking antidepressant medications (such as MAO inhibitors), consult a physician before taking St. John’s wort.
