Essential Fats For Pets™ is a unique formula designed to provide optimal levels of essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Essential Fats for Pets™ contains eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—important usable forms of essential omega-3 fatty acids, as well as gamma linolenic acid (GLA)—an important essential omega-6 fatty acid. The EPA and DHA are derived from marine lipids using a molecular distillation process and the GLA is derived from borage seed oil. Vitamin E is included in the softgel capsules to provide antioxidant protection to these polyunsaturated oils. Every batch of fish oil contained in this product is tested and guaranteed to contain insignificant levels of heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, and other organic contaminants.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known to play important roles in the formation of prostaglandins. The prostaglandins are important cellular regulators that control inflammatory processes and pain in the body. Fish oils may be useful adjuncts in protocols dealing with: 1) Cardiovascular disease, 2) Hypertension, 3) Arthritis and other inflammatory disorders, 4) Psoriasis and other skin problems, 5) Diabetes mellitus and 6) Kidney disease. Research by Chapkin et. al. indicates that in a balanced formula there are synergistic effects between EPA, DHA, and GLA. For example, it is known that EPA inhibits the conversion of GLA into the pro-inflammatory and pain causing arachidonic acid. According to Chapkin’s research, a formula containing a 4-to-1 ratio of EPA to GLA provides the optimal balance of these important fatty acids.
