• LIPOIC ACID contains 100 mg of the highest-quality alpha-lipoic acid (DL thioctic acid).
• Lipoic acid is normally made in the human body, where it functions as an important metabolic nutrient, especially in the conversion of pyruvic acid into acetyl-coenzyme A. It thereby plays a critical role in the metabolism both of fats and carbohydrates into energy.
• Lipoic acid also functions as an extremely powerful antioxidant capable of trapping many different types of free radicals in the body. Because it is both water-soluble and fat-soluble, lipoic acid can operate in a broader range of body tissues than most other antioxidants. Its small size allows lipoic acid to enter areas of the body not easily accessible to many other substances. This allows lipoic acid, for example, to enter the cell nucleus and prevent free-radical damage to DNA.
• Lipoic functions and exists both in a reduced and an oxidized state. It thereby protects other important antioxidants such as glutathione, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. Lipoic acid also chelates heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, free iron, and free copper from the body. It is one of two nutrients known (milk thistle extract is the other) to protect against mushroom poisoning.
• Lipoic acid has been used in a large number of applications, including diabetes, cataracts, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, detoxification, neurological function, cancer, heart disease, and liver disorders.
