MSM is a natural substance found in food and in the human body. It is also a metabolite of DMSO and thereby believed to be one of the reasons DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is an effective pain remedy. MSM is a concentrated source of sulfur, a mineral element critical to normal function and structure of the human body.
HPDI's MSM formula provides the highest-purity (greater than 99.8% - OPTIMSM®) MSM (methylsulfonylmethane).
CONSIDERATIONS AND APPLICATIONS
Sulfur is a raw material for the protein and connective tissue (especially proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate) that make up our body mass, for enzymes that conduct countless chemical reactions, and for powerful natural compounds (such as glutathione) that protect against toxicity and harmful free radicals.
MSM consists chemically of two hydrocarbon units attached to a unit with one sulfur and two oxygen atoms. It has a molecular weight of 94 and therefore is a small molecule that can enter easily into many compartments of the body. Toxicity studies show MSM has extremely low toxicity, comparing favorably to the toxicity of water.
Dr. Stanley W. Jacob, Director of the DMSO Clinic and Professor of Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, has conducted clinical studies on MSM and used it with his patients for more than 20 years. He documents his findings regarding MSM in his book The Miracle of MSM (Putnam 1999).
Dr. Jacob lists as MSM's most significant actions and benefits:
1) Pain control (analgesic), 2) Reduces inflammation, 3) Passes through cellular membranes of the body, including the skin, 4) Dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow, 5) Blocks the action of cholinesterase, thereby helping restore normal bowel activity, 6) Reduces muscle spasm, 7) Alters the cross-linking process in collagen, thereby reducing scar tissue, and 8) Immune normalizing effects. Dr. Jacob lists as the most frequent applications of MSM: 1) Degenerative wear-and-tear of joints, 2) Joint pain, 3) Chronic back pain, 4) Chronic headaches, 5) Muscle pain, 6) Tendonitis and bursitis, 7) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, 8) TMJ problems, 9) Post-traumatic pain and inflammation, and 10) Heartburn.
Typical dosages for MSM range from two to eight grams daily, but larger amounts may be needed in some situations. In some cases loosening of stools may occur. If this happens, you can take smaller amounts spread over the course of the day, or reduce total dosage.
